Military Higher Education - ROTC offers scholarships to help cover your tuition and school supplies and may even allow you to earn a degree before your services begin. Your training takes place while you are still a student, and you will become an army officer when you graduate.

The GI Bill helps current and former soldiers pay for college, trade schools, technical schools, licensure, certification programs, on-the-job training, online schools and more. Many soldiers who use the GI Bill receive full tuition for their service.

Scholarships For Military Service Members And Student Veterans

Tuition assistance programs help active duty, Army Reserve or National Guard soldiers pay for schooling or vocational training. Qualified Soldiers can receive up to $250 per semester hour and up to 16 semester hours per fiscal year – a total of $4,000 per year to help pay for school or vocational training.

Green to Gold helps active duty soldiers defray the school fees to complete a four-year BA program or a two-year graduate program while earning an officer's commission.

To help Soldiers gain a competitive edge in their current and future careers, the Army Online Credential Opportunity, or COOL, helps Soldiers find and pay for certifications and licenses for a variety of Army and private sector jobs.

Under the Loan Repayment Program (LRP), the Army can repay nearly $65,000 of your current student loan debt. This program applies to active duty soldiers, Reserve Soldiers and National Guard Soldiers. There are various requirements needed to qualify. Talk to your recruiter for more information.

Preparing Students Of Military Families For Higher Education

The Federal Perkins Loan Cancellation Program provides active duty military personnel who have served in combat situations the opportunity to potentially cancel their 100% federal Perkins Loan or National Direct Student Loan. This benefit does not apply to Stafford loans or PLUS loans. Active duty servicemen who served at least one year in a hostile fire or imminent hazard payment area are eligible for cancellation of their Perkins Federal Loan Program student loan.

Soldiers interested in pursuing graduate education may be eligible to potentially receive 100% tuition coverage. Talk to your recruiter for more information.

Unfortunately, there is no military student loan forgiveness for spouses of service members. The Army offers college tuition assistance and other career development programs to couples. Read more about family benefits.

Under this program, service members who have been employed by the military or in qualified employment in public service during the past ten years can have their federal student loans fully forgiven. To qualify, you must be employed full time, which is considered at least 30 hours a week or what the employer considers full time, and make 120 monthly and timely accumulated and deductible payments. Personal loans do not qualify.

The National Defense Student Loan Waiver Program is available to members of the military serving under enemy fire or imminent danger. Qualified Soldiers can be eligible to cancel up to 50% of their loan and up to 100% of the Perkins Federal Loan is forgiven.
